UPCOMING OBAMA EVENTS & ACTIVITIES IN CHARLOTTESVILLE~ALBEMARLE
last updated 10-29-08

OK, volunteers. We’re almost there.
Just one final push.
I have a couple of quick announcements, and another call to action.
You all are amazing!

1) N.M. Governor Bill Richardson is coming to town to speak on behalf of Barack Obama! He’ll be speaking at a free event on Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School, 1400 Melbourne Road. INVITE EVERYONE YOU KNOW. He’ll be talking about Obama’s economic, energy and international policies, and will take questions in a town hall format.

2) Training for inside-the-polling place volunteers (you know who you are!) is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Design Center in the Parking Garage across from the Downtown Obama office.

3) Absentee voting in person: Remember to tell people about absentee voting in person. Anyone eligible to vote absentee is eligible to vote absentee in person at the Voter Registrar’s office between now and Saturday. City residents may go to the City Registrar at the east end of the Downtown Mall and County Residents may go to the New County Office Building on 5th Street Extended. (Eligible reasons include working and/or commuting 11 hours on election day, being physically or mentally ill or disabled and unable to come to the polls, caring for someone who is ill and unable to get out, out of the locality on election day, and other reasons  see-
<http://www.sbe.virginia.gov/cms/Absentee_Voting/Index.html#Who%20May%20Vote%20Absentee>.

4) Voter turnout in Virginia is expected to set records everywhere, and we are working hard to make sure that long lines at the polls don’t keep people from voting. Our local registrars have added tables and hired additional workers, and the campaign is doing several things to make the process go more smoothly:

- We will have attorneys inside and outside most polling places, especially in precincts with high Democratic presence or expected high turnout. They will help precinct workers answer eligibility questions quickly and help voters know their rights.
- We will have line crews at each targeted precinct to make sure folks are comfortable, offering bottled water, granola bars, even folding chairs to those in line.
- We will be offering rides to the polls (and to absentee voting in person), though the drivers will be also making phone calls and canvassing between rides!

4) What YOU can do:

Canvass weeknights and weekends to get the vote out! PLEASE call and schedule your shift (see <http://www.cvilleobama.org for canvass launch sites>) :

434-422-9365
Precincts: Tonsler, Clark, Recreation, Jefferson Park Jack Jouett

434-249-7029
Precincts: Walker, Carver

434-242-2388
Venable, Alumni Hall, University Hall, East Ivy

434-326-1850
All other County precincts

Work on Election Day
• Canvass
• Make phone calls
• Join the line crews
TO VOLUNTEER & SCHEDULE A SHIFT in Clark, Jack Jouett, Jefferson Park, Recreation & Tonsler precincts, contact Mickie at mmmousy@aol.com. Tell her when you are available and what you want to do.

For all other precincts, call 434-326-1850.

Other ways you can help reduce lines and encourage voting:
• Walk to your polling place.
• Park further away (save that spot for someone who may go home if they can't find a spot).
• Carpool.
• Take the free bus (and tell people that ALL city buses and JAUNT buses will be free on election day!)
• Make sure your neighbors and friends know where they should go to vote, offer them rides!
• If you helped register people, follow up with them where possible to be sure they know their polling place.
• Arrange group babysitting since the kids are off school.

Finally, if you can take off the four days – Saturday, Sunday, Monday & Tuesday, let us know <mailto:k.szakos@embarqmail.com>. And if you can travel to canvass in Staunton, Harrisonburg, Lovingston, or Campbell County, let us know <k.szakos@embarqmail.com>.

Hang in there! And thanks for all you do (and will do even more of this week).

- Kristin

PS
Halloween is coming!
The children of Charlottesville will soon descend on the Downtown Mall in their costumes and excitement to trick-or-treat from all the Downtown merchants.  We plan to participate:  PLEASE donate bags of small candy bars big enough to put a Vote Nov. 4 sticker on.  Bring them into the office at 422 E. Main by this Friday.   Packages of Avery 5130-style address labels to print the message on are also welcome. Thanks!

Feeling hospitable?
Host an out-of-state Obama volunteer in your home during the last days of the campaign.  To offer your space, e-mail k.szakos@embarqmail.com with your address, phone number, how many people you can take, and anything special about your house.

Feeling generous?
Donate gas cards for our rural organizers!  Bring them to the downtown office at 422 E. Main.

Other stuff we need:
• Laptop computers available evenings, weekends and the first three days of November
• Homemade cookies in packs of three, in zip or tie-shut plastic bags
• Bottled water, granola bars, juice boxes
• Housing for out-of-state volunteers
• Bags of small candy bars for Halloween
• Packages of Avery 5130-style address labels
• Your time – canvassing and phoning!
